Benefit statements are out and online

This year's statements have been mailed out, and they are also available to members online by logging in at aonmastertrust.com.au. The website also has a guide to the benefit statement, so if you get any queries from your members, you might want to steer them in that direction. If they need further assistance with their statement, or are looking for financial advice, they can call or email us.

Ladies - this is for you

Performance: we're now 5th out of 120

The latest SuperRatings survey* shows that we've crept up the performance ladder.

A return of 4.31% for the year ended 30 September 2009 ranks our default investment option, Balanced-Index, 5th out of 120 balanced super fund options (compared with 9th out of 113 in June).

Our default option** has beaten the not-for-profit fund median for 1-year returns, and the all fund and master trust medians for both 1 and 3-year returns

** Option commenced 22 October 2004 so 5-year return not available

Market update (quarter ended 30 September 2009)

The Australian economy is stronger than predicted a year ago and in much better shape than other developed countries. Seasonally-adjusted Gross Domestic Product rose by 0.6% (June quarter), the unemployment rate remained steady, and retail sales rose more than expected in August after falling in July.

The Australian dollar has also been strong and there has been talk of parity with the US dollar. Australian investment markets also showed strength over the September quarter. However, question marks remain over the sustainability of increases in the local sharemarket given the fragility of the US economic recovery and its impact on corporate profits, uncertainty about China sustaining its pace of growth, and the effect of the stronger Australian dollar.

For the full report, including market sector updates, see our Market update - quarter ended 30 September 2009.

Legislation

Who can certify documents

Amendments to the AML/CTF Rules have increased the list of persons who can certify documents and extracts of documents as being true copies of original documents. See our factsheet and legislative news for more information.

Defined benefit members and concessional contributions cap

Following the recent reduction in the concessional contributions caps, the Income Tax Assessment Regulations 1997 have been amended to provide transitional arrangements to certain members of defined benefit funds. The new regulations provide that notional taxed contributions exceeding the concessional contributions cap will be treated as though they are equal to the cap, provided certain conditions are met. This means that a member will not be liable for excess contributions tax on these contributions if the conditions are met. See Aon Super News for more information.
